Goals and characteristics
The goal of this fellowship is to provide a comprehensive postgraduate experience in sports medicine. This involves imparting skills in the following areas: 1) Clinical evaluation of operative and non-operative patients both in the office and on-field settings. 2) Non-operative management 3) Operative management, including open and arthroscopic techniques 4) Postoperative management including rehabilitation techniques and modalities 5) Organizational management of a sports medicine facility 6) Original research. The Fellow rotates with six attendings at three locations including Weiss Memorial Hospital, Saint Joseph Hospital, and University of Illinois - Chicago. The Fellow’s office is at Center for Athletic Medicine. The Center for Athletic Medicine is a new 5,000 square foot facility which provides comprehensive sports medicine care including primary care, psychological care, podiatry, nutrition, athletic training, and physical therapy on-site. Fellows participate in the medical care of athletes including those of the Chicago Sky (professional women’s basketball team), the Chicago Red Stars (professional women’s soccer team), the Windy City Thunderbolts (professional baseball team), University of Illinois at Chicago Athletics, several area colleges, and a number of local high schools. Fellows participate in educational programs both at the University of Illinois - Chicago and at member hospitals. Research facilities are at the University of Illinois - Chicago. A permanent Illinois license is required.
